Pigs in a blanket are so fun, quick, easy to make, and delicious! Made with just 4 simple ingredients and in under 30 minutes, these homemade pigs in a blanket are the perfect appetizer or a snack to munch on. The recipe starts with hot dogs snuggled in flaky, buttery biscuits, brushed with an egg wash, sprinkled with everything but the bagel seasoning, and baked to a puffy golden brown.
Pigs in a blanket are the ultimate appetizer and party finger food. They are so quick and easy to make and are both kids-approved and adult-approved. They are perfect for any occasion – get-togethers, birthday parties, tailgating, picnics, or just a quick and easy dinner or appetizer on a busy weeknight.
You can make these in no time! They are ready in under 30 minutes and are also perfect to make ahead of time! We usually make a bigger batch and enjoy them for a couple of days as breakfast or a snack. My kids love helping me make these and they are one of their favorite after-school snacks. I always try to keep the ingredients on hand and we make these often. They are so convenient to pack in school lunches or for a homemade car ride snack.
I always try to come up with fun ideas for after-school snacks. Both my kiddos are in sports after school, so we do not eat dinner after they come home from school. They would instead grab a quick snack and then we eat dinner after they are done with their activities. So, these pigs in the blanket are one of my go-to snacks for them because they are easy to pack in a zip-lock bag or grab on the go.
Why you will love making these quick and easy pigs in a blanket recipe
Kids-approved – Pigs in a blanket are truly loved by most kids and are one of the most kid-friendly snacks. Even the pickiest eaters are usually willing to eat hot dogs.
Quick and easy to make – Using pre-made dough (Pillsbury flaky biscuits) makes this recipe simple and quick and easy to make. The prep work is minimal, and they come together and cook fast.
Versatile – These can be made with regular hot dogs or mini cocktail sausages. You can also use breakfast sausage or even meatballs and wrap them in the flaky dough. I prefer to use Pillsbury flaky buttery biscuits, but these can also be made with Pillsbury crescent rolls.
Ingredients
- Pillsbury flaky layers of buttery biscuits
- Hot dogs – you can your favorite kind of hot dogs, or you can use mini cocktail sausages (Lil Smokies)
- Egg – to baste the pigs in the blanket before baking them
- Everything but the bagel seasoning – this popular seasoning works great for this recipe as it adds a really nice flavor and an extra crunch.
Serving suggestions
To serve these pigs in a blanket, dip them in your favorite dipping sauce. We love to dip them in ketchup, Dijon mustard, ranch, or salsa. These can be served as a main course with a pasta salad, potato salad (recipe linked below), or a green leafy salad on the side. For breakfast, serve them with a side of fruit.

How to make my homemade pigs in a blanket
Open the can of Pillsbury biscuits and let them rest at room temperature for 5 minutes. Cut the hot dogs in half. Place a hot dog half in a biscuit and close nicely pinching the corners.
Line a baking sheet with foil and spray it with cooking oil spray. Arrange the pigs in a blanket on the baking sheet. Brush them with the egg wash (one beaten egg and a little bit of water), sprinkle with everything but the bagel seasoning, and bake until golden brown, about 20 minutes.
Notes:
- For one batch, I use one can of the refrigerated Pillsbury biscuits, and 4 hot dogs cut in half. But to be honest, we double the recipe every single time since these are a favorite snack in our house.
- To freeze cooked pigs in a blanket, allow them to fully cool down first before placing them in an air-tight container or large zip-lock bag. Thaw in the refrigerator overnight and reheat in the oven at 325 degrees F until warmed through.
- To store leftovers, place the pigs in a blanket in an air-tight container or a zip-lock bag and keep them in the refrigerator for 3-5 days.
