The secret to this recipe is cooking the sausage and potatoes in beer. Sausage, potatoes, and beer are a classic combination, and all the flavors marry so well together, making this dish so flavorful and delicious.

This is one of the dishes my mom used to make for us often growing up in Eastern Europe. I remember the aroma of the sausage and potatoes cooking in the beer and the house would smell so warm and cozy. My mom always cooked recipes that were quick and easy but also very flavorful. She never measured or followed recipe instructions, yet somehow she always knew how much of everything needs to be added. When she comes over to visit us now and makes the amazing meals that she used to make us, I make sure to stay next to her as she cooks and write down the measurements and instructions for everything as she goes.

Ingredients

  • Sausage – you can use any fresh sausage you prefer. I use Italian mild sausage usually.
  • Potatoes – I like to use yellow potatoes but any potatoes you love will work for this recipe. You can use red potatoes; you can use fingerling potatoes. You can also add onion and peppers if you’d like.
  • Beer – feel free to use any beer you prefer. During the cooking process, the alcohol evaporates but the beer gives the dish such a great flavor. You can also use beef broth or water if you do not want to use the beer.
  • Spices – salt, pepper, paprika, garlic powder, and Bulgarian savory spice is all you need for this recipe. It can be purchased in most international food stores as well as online here. Or feel free to use your favorite spice blend.

How to make this easy oven-baked sausage and potatoes with beer recipe

See the recipe card below this post for ingredient quantities and full instructions.

Arrange the sausages in a deep baking dish. I use two packs of sausages (about 10 links) but you can make more or less. Cut the potatoes into wedges. Make sure the wedges are not too skinny because if they are, the potatoes will fall apart while cooking. Also, try to get them all roughly the same size so that they cook at the same rate. Arrange them in between the sausages until the pan is covered. Season with spices. Pour one bottle of beer and 1 cup of water to cover the potatoes. Bake until everything is golden brown. Halfway through, I like to flip the sausage, so it gets nice and golden brown on both sides.

What to serve with this delicious sausage and potatoes dish

Lettuce salad or Greek salad (tomatoes and cucumbers) go so well with this meal.

Roasted vegetables – roast or sauté your favorite veggies in a bit of olive oil and salt and pepper and that is a great side for this dish.
